Aster Lake Backcountry Camping, Peter Lougheed Provincial Park

Aster Lake Backcountry Campground is in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, 50 km south of Hwy. 1 on Hwy. 40 and south on Kananaskis Lakes Trail. The closest access is at the Upper Lake Day Use Area. It is 10.8 km from the trailhead via Upper Kananaskis Lake Circuit/Aster Lake Route Trail. This idyllic spot is accessed via an unmaintained trail so is only suitable for experienced hikers, prepared to routefind and fend for themselves. It has space for about 5 tents in an open meadow with beautiful mountain views. No fires are permitted. There are pit/vault toilets and secure food storage lockers.<b

<br>Sixteen designated back-country camping areas are located throughout the park. Please see the map. Some of these have multiple campsites that can accommodate larger groups: Mile 10, Jackson Lake East and South, Kinnaird Island and Blackett Lake. As well as a backcountry composting toilet and fire pit, most of the camping areas are equipped with picnic tables and bear poles or bear lockers. Backcountry campsites are first come-first served. Lawrence Lake Campground is located in Lawrence Lake Provincial Recreation Area, 12 km west and 30 km north of Athabasca on Hwy. 2 to access road. This small lake is a great for boating, paddling, and fishing.<br>Five designated back-country camping areas are located throughout the park. Please see the map. As well as a backcountry composting toilet and fire pit, most of the camping areas are equipped with picnic tables and bear poles or bear lockers. Backcountry campsites are first come-first served. Boulton Creek Campground, Peter Lougheed Provincial Park

Boulton Creek Campground is found in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, about 50 km south of Hwy. 1 on Hwy. 40 and south on Kananaskis Lakes Trail.. This large campground has over 120 well-treed sites for RVs and tents. There are unserviced, power and water, and walk-in options. This pretty campground is found in Bow Valley Provincial Park, about 5 km east of Canmore on Hwy. 1. Upgrades in spring 2017 added 20 campsites. The majority of the campsites are now serviced with power. Additional upgrades are coming in spring 2018, with the addition of a comfort station, a few walk-in tenting sites and water becoming available at the power serviced sites. The campground is next to the Bow River, offering pleasant views. Canyon Campground is in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, 50 km south of Hwy. 1 on Hwy. 40 and south on Kananaskis Lakes Trail. There are 50 unserviced sites suitable for RVs and tents, with larger sites on open grass and smaller sites in the trees. Canyon Campground is situated just north of the earthern Pocaterra Hydroelectric Dam on Lower Kananaskis Lake, and offers access to hiking and mountain biking trails and paved bike trails.<br>Food lockers available for cyclists. Eau Claire Campground is in Spray Valley Provincial Park, 40 km south of Hwy. 1 on Hwy. 40. There are about 50 sites here suitable for RVs and tents. Well-spaced sites are nestled amongst pine and spruce. Surrounded by Rocky Mountains, you can access the Eau Claire Interpretive trail, various unmaintained trails or try fishing in the Kananaskis River.<br>Food lockers available for cyclists. Elbow Lake Backcountry Campground is in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, 75 km south of Hwy. 1 on Hwy. 40. The closest access is at Elbow Pass Day Use Area. It is 1.3 km from the trailhead via Elbow Lake Trail. There are around 15 tenting pads in the forest along the emerald green lake. Here there are firepits and firewood, pit/vault toilets, and secure food storage lockers.

Forks Backcountry Campground is in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, 50 km south of Hwy. 1 on Hwy. 40 and south on Kananaskis Lakes Trail. The closest access is at North Interlakes Day Use Area. It is 7.3 km from the trailhead via Upper Kananaskis Lake Circuit/Three Isle Lake Trail. About 15 tent sites are nestled in the forest at this lovely creekside campground. Here there are group firepits and firewood, pit/vault toilets, and secure food storage lockers.

Interlakes Campground is in Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, 50 km south of Hwy. 1 on Hwy. 40 and south on Kananaskis Lakes Trail. This picturesque campground along the shore of Lower Kananaskis Lake has around 45 well-treed campsites for RVs and tents. From here there is close access to the lakes for those hoping to canoe, fish or go boating.
